Forest context

Colombia hosts some of the most diverse forest ecosystems in Latin America, spanning the Amazon, Andean, Pacific and Caribbean regions, and supporting biodiversity, water regulation and rural livelihoods. Forest and land use dynamics are shaped by agricultural expansion, particularly the conversion of forests to pasturelands for cattle ranching, as well as illegal mining, illicit crop production and activities in the timber sector. These pressures are compounded by land-use change associated with infrastructure development and post conflict territorial dynamics. In this context, national forest and land-use policies, restoration initiatives and territorial planning frameworks play an important role in guiding sustainable forest management and landscape resilience.

Our approach

EFI supports agricultural supply chains and forest sector in Colombia by engagingwith government institutions, agricultural producer organisations, civil society and the private sector. Our work focuses on strengthening capacities and policy and regulatory frameworks for sustainable agricultural production, forest and land‑use governance, and forest management.

In this context, EFI assists Colombia in meeting international and regional sustainability requirements, including the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This is done by strengthening due diligence and legality compliance and improving the use of spatial and other compliance‑related data for monitoring and decision making.

Our work centres on the following sectors:

  • Coffee sector – technical support on legality compliance and deforestation risk monitoring for public authorities and coffee supply chain actors.
  • Palm oil sector – technical support on traceability, legality compliance and deforestation risk monitoring for public authorities and palm oil supply chain actors.
  • Cocoa sector – technical support on traceability, legality analysis and due diligence guidelines for EUDR legal compliance and deforestation risk monitoring for public authorities and cocoa supply chain actors.
  • Forest sector – technical support on community forestry and national forest policy framework.
