Forest context

Paraguay’s forest ecosystems reflect strong geographic and climatic contrasts between the Paraneña region in the east and the Chaco in the west. The Paraneña region is characterised by humid subtropical conditions, while the Gran Chaco – the second largest forest in the region after the Amazon- comprises dry and humid lowland forests with tropical climates and marked seasonal variability. Land-use dynamics are shaped by agricultural and livestock expansion, timber extraction and infrastructure development, resulting in significant forest conversion in the Chaco region in eastern Paraguay.
