Forest context

Peru hosts some of the most extensive and biodiverse forest ecosystems in the world, dominated by Amazonian tropical forests, alongside dry coastal forests and relict Andean forests. Land‑use dynamics are largely driven by agricultural expansion, timber extraction, infrastructure development and mining, with forest loss and degradation concentrated mainly in the Amazon region.

Our approach

EFI supports agricultural supply chains in Peru by engaging with government institutions, agricultural producer organizations, civil society and the private sector. Our work focuses on strengthening capacities and policy and regulatory frameworks for sustainable agricultural production, forest and land‑use governance.

In this context, EFI assists Peru in meeting international and regional sustainability requirements, including the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This is done by strengthening due diligence and legality compliance and improving the use of spatial and other compliance‑related data for monitoring and decision making.

Our work centres on the following sectors:

  • Coffee sector – technical support on legality compliance and deforestation‑risk monitoring for public authorities and coffee supply‑chain actors.
  • Cocoa sector – technical support on legality compliance and deforestation‑risk monitoring for public authorities and cocoa supply‑chain actors.
