Forest context

Tanzania is characterised by extensive forest and woodland ecosystems, dominated by miombo woodlands, alongside lowland forests, montane forests and coastal mangroves. Land‑use dynamics are driven mainly by agricultural expansion, settlement growth, timber extraction and fuelwood use, resulting in ongoing forest loss and degradation across several regions of the country.

Our approach

EFI works with government institutions, producer organisations, civil society and the private sector in Tanzania. We assist Tanzania in meeting international and regional sustainability requirements, including the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Our work supports agricultural supply chains by strengthening traceability and farmers data accessibility and policy and regulatory frameworks for forest and land management. Since 2025, EFI also contributes to the development of agroecology and agroforestry in the coffee and cashew sectors.

  • Coffee sector – We provide technical support on legality due diligence and deforestation risk monitoring for public authorities and coffee supply chain actors.
  • Agroecology – EFI partners with national stakeholders to support the development of agroecological practices and policies in the cocoa and cashew sectors.
