ResAlliance

ResAlliance (Landscape resilience knowledge alliance for agriculture and forestry in the Mediterranean basin) was a Horizon Europe thematic network coordinated by the European Forest Institute. The project strengthened knowledge exchange and practical capacity for climate-resilient landscapes across the Mediterranean, with a particular focus on agriculture, forestry and agroforestry systems exposed to increasing climate hazards such as wildfires, droughts, desertification, floods and pests & diseases. 

Over three years, ResAlliance brought together a broad and diverse community of practitioners, researchers, public authorities, land managers, farmers, foresters, advisors and civil-society organisations through the LandNet network; and five community of practice-style regional LandLabs in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus. The project engaged more than 2,200 stakeholders and created spaces for dialogue, mutual learning and exchange between local experience, scientific knowledge and policy needs. More than 500 participants took part in Landscape Resilience Workshops, field visits, showrooms, policy forums, and info sessions. These events helped connect knowledge providers and users across the Mediterranean. 

The project addressed landscape resilience from multiple angles. It covered land management practices, governance approaches, financial instruments, technological solutions, stakeholder engagement methods and policy frameworks. This broad thematic scope allowed ResAlliance to explore resilience not only as a biophysical challenge, but also as a social, economic and institutional one. Its work helped identify needs, barriers, gaps and solutions for improving the resilience of Mediterranean landscapes, while also promoting practical responses already being implemented by farmers, foresters, landowners, advisors, public institutions and other actors. 

ResAlliance produced a substantial body of practice-oriented outputs and policy recommendations. These include: 

• 120 multilingual factsheets presenting practices and case studies on landscape resilience; 
• a multilingual Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on climate hazards and solutions for Mediterranean landscapes; 
• strategic guidance for resilient landscapes; a Landscape resilience blueprint for the wider Mediterranean region; and 
• policy recommendations expressed in the White paper on policy recommendations for landscape resilience in the Mediterranean region, and the policy brief Landscape resilience in the Mediterranean – Translating solutions into policy and practice. 

The ResAlliance website will remain accessible until November 2028.
