Forests of the Future: Research and forest management in an era of change

The aim of this EFI associated event is to bring together scientists and experts to exchange insights on contemporary challenges in forest management, forest biodiversity conservation, monitoring in forest ecosystems, and revitalisation of degraded forests and forest habitats. Special emphasis is placed on the synergy between forest science and practice, and on the importance of long-term research in strategic decision-making.

The event is organised by EFI Member the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, University of Zagreb, on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the Department of Forest Ecology and Silviculture.

The Department of Forest Ecology and Silviculture is marked by a century-long tradition of research and promotion of close-to-nature forest management, recognised in Croatia as the Zagreb School of Silviculture. Thanks to this approach, today almost 97% of Croatian forests have a high degree of naturalness and are dominated by climatogenic tree species: pedunculate oak, sessile oak, holm oak, pubescent oak, European beech, and silver fir.

The tradition and integration of silvicultural, ecological, vegetation, and pedological research make the Department of Forest Ecology and Silviculture a key authority when it comes to envisioning the future of our forest ecosystems. This forms the basis of the concept of forests of the future as a vision of sustainable management in an era of climate change and increasing sensitivity of forest ecosystems.

The scientific conference Forests of the Future: Research and Forest Management in an Era of Change provides a foundation for visionary thinking, so that with the help of science we can ensure a sustainable future for forests as our most valuable natural asset.
