URBANA
Development and Verification of Urban AnalyticsURBANA was an innovative pilot project developed in partnership between EFI’s Biocities Facility, the European Space Agency (ESA) and GMATICS. The project focused on leveraging satellite data to generate urban analytics that support improved urban planning, environmental conditions, public health, and energy efficiency in European cities. In particular, it looked at assessing the state and evolution of urban green areas and translating this data into actionable insights.
More specifically, the project covered:
- Urban planning: analysis of urban green assets (e.g. tree position, species, structure), monitoring their evolution, and identifying priority areas for new tree planting in urban and peri-urban settings;
- Environment and health: assessments related to tree and park health, thermal stress, air pollution, water quality, and broader environment–health interactions;
- Energy efficiency: analytics supporting cool/green roof planning and evaluating temperature impacts on energy systems
