Enabling new informational landscapes for resolving nature-based solutions literacy and planning in Barcelona Metropolitan Area

Published 31 March 2025 DOI https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ufug.2025.128719

This paper builds on the need to develop sound information landscapes to support nature-based solutions (NBS) planning in metropolitan areas. Information literacy was strengthened through a complex participatory process in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, aimed at identifying existing knowledge and potential barriers to implementing NBS, as well as opportunities for action. Communication and storytelling accompanied the entire process from the outset as a cross-cutting element.

Participatory information maps were produced as the core of the co-design and co-learning dynamics. The results revealed gaps mainly related to NBS literacy, biodiversity and cultural ecosystem services. Furthermore, actors with different interests held differing knowledge of NBS, as well as different interests and priorities regarding the territory.

We conclude by highlighting the importance of evidence-based planning, information generators and NBS literacy for strengthening the understanding, preservation and implementation of NBS in metropolitan areas.
