EFI Biocities webinar: Nature in cities, or cities in nature?
How can cities bring more nature into urban life, and how do they know it is working? The next EFI Biocities webinar, Nature in cities, or cities in nature? Planning, measuring, and enhancing urban biodiversity, takes place on Thursday 26 November (15:00–16:30 CET). It will explore how cities can increase and measure biodiversity by connecting EU policy with practical action on the ground.
The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 calls on all cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants to develop an Urban Nature Plan, and the Nature Restoration Regulation also asks cities to help restore urban ecosystems.
This webinar explores what that means in practice, with the following speakers:
- Kes McCormick (Professor, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) and Stuart Connop (Associate Professor and Director of the Sustainability Research Institute, University of East London) will introduce Urban Nature Plans, drawing on the UNP+ project. They will explain why cities develop them, the steps involved, and the need for good biodiversity data and ongoing monitoring.
- Damien Mittempergher (Economist, IUCN) will introduce biodiversity footprinting and natural capital accounting for cities. He will draw on the experience of the CircHive project and its BEEHive community.
A further speaker, presenting a local case study of biodiversity work on the ground, will be announced soon.
This is the third session in the EFI Biocities webinar series, following Healthy cities by nature (June) and Urban forests for climate change adaptation (September). The webinar will be moderated by the EFI Biocities team and includes presentations, a moderated panel and live Q&A.
