EFI Mediterranean Network News: amplifying forest stories and tackling climate risks across the Mediterranean
The June 2026 edition of the EFI Mediterranean Network News showcases the people, ideas, and initiatives driving resilience across Mediterranean forests and landscapes. From forest genetic resources and wildfire risk management to ecosystem restoration and bioeconomy innovation, this issue highlights how collaboration and knowledge exchange are helping address some of the region’s most pressing environmental challenges.
A key feature is the launch of Voices of the Mediterranean Forests, a fully funded media workshop taking place in Barcelona later this year. Bringing together journalists and environmental communicators from across the region, the initiative aims to strengthen storytelling around forest genetic resources, biodiversity, and resilience, helping bring these critical topics into the public conversation.
This month's Network Threads focuses on drought and desertification, two climate-related challenges that are increasingly shaping Mediterranean landscapes. Through reports, practical solutions, and inspiring examples from across the region, the section examines both the risks facing Mediterranean and European forests and the opportunities for building resilience through informed action and cooperation.
The newsletter also explores new research on economic incentives for wildfire risk management, the hidden workforce behind Spain’s non-wood forest products sector, and innovative approaches to enhancing the profitability and sustainability of chestnut forests. Additional stories highlight the launch of a new platform for monitoring forest ecosystem services and emerging pathways towards a more inclusive forest-based bioeconomy.
Opportunities for engagement remain a central theme, with open calls, international events, and new research publications offering fresh avenues for learning, collaboration, and professional development across the Mediterranean forest community.
