Update of the position paper on wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean: assessment of the proposed actions

Eleven years have passed since Mediterranean stakeholders produced a set of recommendations on wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean, collected in the Position paper on wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean (2011). As the intensity of fire risk in our region increases due to climate and socioeconomic challenges, it is critical to understand the progress that has been made toward meeting these recommendations.

The European Forest Institute (EFI) and the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, with the support of the Provincial Council of Barcelona, are conducting five surveys to assess the actions proposed eleven years ago in the position paper that are required to address the Mediterranean wildfire reality of the next ten years. The results will be used to release an updated version of the position paper to serve as a reference document for policy makers and managers.

The proposed actions in the position paper are grouped under five recommendations, with 6 to 17 actions each. The first five surveys replicate this structure. You will be asked about the relevance of each proposed action for the next 10 years, and you will be able to comment the actions, suggest their removal and even advise new ones. Previous work allowed to create a new 6th recommendation, for which your proposed actions are welcome!

You can take the surveys that fit your field of expertise:

  1. Enhancement of the international cooperation on wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean

  2. Integration of wildfire prevention in national forest programmes/policies and in adaptation strategies to climate change

  3. Promotion of knowledge and education on wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean

  4. Enhancement of sustainable financial mechanisms for prevention of wildfires in the Mediterranean

  5. Enhancement of harmonized Information Systems to deal with new wildfire risks in the Mediterranean

  6. New recommendation: Adoption of a governance model able to tackle the multidimensional aspects of the wildfires and the interdependency of their causes

We highly encourage to read the position paper (each recommendation is just one or two pages long): Position paper on wildfire prevention in the Mediterranean
