Why this Media Workshop?

Mediterranean forests are home to extraordinary diversity, the guarantee of their adaptation potential in a changing environment, a living library shaped over millennia. Yet Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) remain largely invisible to the public, to policy debate, and to the media. Climate change, land abandonment, and habitat loss are accelerating the erosion of this heritage faster than science can document it.

Science alone cannot protect what society does not value. Bridging that gap requires communicators who understand both the ecological stakes and the human stories. People who can translate complex science into experiences are able to move audiences to care and act. That is exactly what this workshop sets out to build.

Germany’s commitment to biodiversity, forest conservation, and multilateral environmental cooperation extends well beyond its own borders. The German Consulate General in Barcelona is proud to support this initiative as part of its environmental diplomacy mission — fostering science-society dialogue across the Mediterranean region and strengthening the role of culture and communication in sustainable development.

Mediterranean forests deserve Mediterranean voices. By backing this workshop, the Consulate invests in a new generation of communicators who can carry forest stories from the research lab to the living room in Arabic, French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, and beyond. This is German‑Mediterranean partnership in action: science, diplomacy, and storytelling working together for forests that belong to all of us.

Who can join?

This workshop is designed for motivated early‑career professionals (aged 20–35) who:

  • Work as journalists, science communicators, documentary makers, photographers, podcast producers, or digital content creators.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in environmental, nature, or sustainability topics.
  • Are based in or have strong ties to a Mediterranean country (including North Africa, Southern Europe, or the Levant).
  • Are at an early or emerging stage of their career (typically under 5 years of professional experience).
  • Are committed to sharing knowledge and outputs with their home country audiences after the workshop.

We strongly encourage applications from communicators working in Arabic, French, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Croatian, Slovenian, and other Mediterranean languages, and from countries underrepresented in international environmental media.
