The overarching objective of this study was to understand better the range of demands facing different types of rural land use in Europe. The project studied how these interact with one another to strengthen the knowledge base about ways in which policy decisions can support the optimal use of land, taking into account impacts on ecosystem services.
The project aimed to
- assess current land use, its functions and its potential for improvement
- review the risks that excess demands for biotic production from land, and land use change associated with this demand, could damage environmental policy goals
- explore possible ways to have a more efficient use of land resource, meaning more ecosystem services without compromising productivity, or more biotic resource without compromising ecosystem services or causing other forms of environmental damage.
The output by EFI was a forest resource use assessment focusing on different goods and service demands from different policies.
