This was a subproject of the larger scenario modelling project. The aim of the project was to develop a method to evaluate sustainable forestry in North-West Russia. The specific objectives were:
- to gather and compile the most recent data of the present state of the forests of the St. Petersburg region;
- to simulate the development of the forests of the St. Petersburg region for the next 100 years under three scenarios: 1) future management with current harvesting levels, 2) future management with maximum sustainable harvesting levels, and 3) future nature conservation management in which certain parts of the forest are excluded from harvesting;
- to provide the regional forest managers and policy makers with outlooks of the state of forests under different scenarios.
