The project analysed species distribution and species-related site characteristics at the European level in order to identify optimal management options to increase value production of European forests. The project consisted of the following steps:
- literature review on the tree species involved;
- questionnaire on the existence and importance of mixed broadleaf forests in European countries;
- pilot studies on selected plots based on the literature review;
- evaluation and interpretation of the pilot studies;
- analysis of the data;
- development of a model to describe the relations between basic parameters (crown expansion, diameter growth, age, tree height etc.);
- development of models for managers and decision-makers.
