The objective of the project was to define and describe in detail the system of nomenclature together with a comprehensive legend which is appropriate for classifying and describing the forested land of Europe, both in terms of its economic properties (usually described statistically) and its environmental qualities (often described using mapped or georeferenced data). The project was carried out for the Joint Research Centre Ispra of the European Commission, and funded by CESD-Communautaire, Luxembourg.
