EFIMED July Newsletter 2025

The July edition of the EFI Mediterranean Network News shares progress in forest science, policy and innovation, with a focus on soil health, fire resilience and sustainable land management.

A featured highlight is the new policy brief published by the European Forest Institute together with the EU-funded HoliSoils project. It presents a harmonised methodology to support the EU Soil Monitoring Law, using DNA-based tools and standardised soil sampling to enable comparable data on biodiversity, condition and carbon storage in European forests.

HoliSoils also contributed to the 2025 Ecology of Soil Microorganisms Conference, where researchers shared evidence that microbial biomass, more than diversity, improves the modelling of soil carbon and nitrogen cycling. Meanwhile, the FOREST4EU project showcased how Mediterranean countries are strengthening agroforestry through knowledge sharing and innovation during a series of study visits.

In Barcelona, FIRE-RES concluded its Innovation Days by promoting digital and nature-based solutions for wildfire resilience, while ResAlliance brought together farmers, foresters and researchers in Catalonia to exchange practices for climate adaptation. The newsletter also explores local forest management, biodiversity credits, and new circular economy models such as FUTURECORK’s cork-stopper playground and certification scheme.

As ever, this edition includes calls, upcoming events and publications from all over the Mediterranean, as well as items of interest from elsewhere.
