EFIMED’s June newsletter: driving wildfire resilience and forest innovation across regions

The June issue of the EFI Mediterranean Network News highlights the selected solutions from the FIRE-RES Open Innovation Challenge, which is supporting over 50 pioneering innovations tackling wildfire risks in Europe, South America and the United States. These solutions, developed through the FIRE-RES Innovation Hubs and Acceleration Programme, cover every stage of wildfire management, from prevention and preparedness to response and recovery, and demonstrate the power of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
This edition also features recent studies showing the benefits of collective forest management in Galicia and new insights from the SAFER-LANDS initiative, which is strengthening Portuguese community forests. Stories from Portugal showcase how families have managed cork oak and ancient oak forests for generations, balancing economic viability with biodiversity and rural employment.
We also cover the outcomes of the 6th Forest Innovation Workshop and a new report from IUFRO on forests as pillars of social and economic resilience. In addition, the Seed4Forest interactive tool is helping guide smarter tree planting for forest restoration across Europe, while the ForestPaths project continues to develop scenario modelling tools to support sustainable forest management and policy decisions.
In this issue, you will also find updates on the latest research, open calls for forest monitoring pilots and funding opportunities for small forest owners, as well as a rich line-up of upcoming events, including the Youth Innovation and Leadership for Ecosystem Restoration webinar and major conferences taking place across Europe later this year.
As always, this edition includes calls, upcoming events, and publications from across the Mediterranean and beyond, alongside updates on policy forums, international projects, and open opportunities for funding and collaboration.
