EFIMED’s November newsletter: climate hotspots, forest genetics and resilient landscapes
The November edition of the EFI Mediterranean Network News captures a busy month for Mediterranean forests on the global stage, from COP30 in Belém to new research on water resilience, genetic diversity and changing wood markets.
At COP30, the Mediterranean was highlighted as a global climate hotspot, with MedECC experts and EFIMED scientists underlining how the region faces the impacts of global change “first and worst”. This edition reports on Mediterranean–Amazon dialogues, nature-based climate solutions and the need to link traditional knowledge, cultural heritage and science in climate negotiations.
Innovation and resilience run throughout this November’s issue. FOREST4EU and ResAlliance showcase interactive innovation and landscape-based solutions that can inform CAP reforms and Green Deal implementation, while new tools from the eco2for project help scale forest carbon credits in Spain. A major upgrade to the EUFGIS platform, together with FORGENIUS research on drought adaptation, strengthens Europe’s capacity to monitor forest genetic resources. Other features span forest disturbance mapping and future wood demand from ForestPaths, restoration planning from SUPERB, and rewilding debates in Mediterranean landscapes.
Readers will also find stories on Greece’s IMFE Herbarium, sustainable moss harvesting in Wales, and Armani’s regenerative cotton project in Apulia. Opinion pieces explore our emotional relationship with nature, the politics of forest news in Türkiye, and why every scientist should communicate. New podcast episodes from IUFRO and EUSTAFOR dive into holistic forest science and the forest-based bioeconomy.
As always, the newsletter rounds up open calls and events – from HoliSoils and FOREST4EU webinars to the EUFGIS relaunch, the Future of the Bioeconomy conference and the EFI Mediterranean Network Forum 2026 in Valencia – alongside the latest publications and partner newsletters.
