EFI has awarded four grants for forest restoration activities in Ghana, for a total of EUR 2.39 million. The grants will be used to restore degraded forests, improve farmers’ agricultural practices and support community-led reforestation efforts. A launch event was held on 13 November to kick off the four projects, with a symbolic tree planting ceremony.

Following a rigorous selection process, the grants were awarded to:

World Vision Ghana

Through its field office in Ghana, World Vision advances its global mission of working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. Among the organsation’s areas of focus in Ghana are food security and improving livelihoods; work in these areas has included the restoration of degraded lands and sustainable agriculture.

Project: support the restoration of 1,500 hectares of degraded land in the Nabdam District through farmer-managed natural regeneration which integrates traditional knowledge, cultural heritage, and community-led forest and landscape restoration practices.

Proforest

Proforest, with its Africa office in Ghana, works with governments, companies and civil society organisations to have a positive impact on the forestry and agriculture commodity sectors through building capacity, and facilitating multi-stakeholder processes for policy dialogue, joint learning, knowledge sharing and practical implementation.

Project: restore forest cover in the Asunafo North Sub Hotspot Intervention Area of the Asunafo-Asutifi Landscape through rehabilitation of 8,300 hectares of degraded forest areas and enhancement of tree stock using dynamic agroforestry.

Nature & Development Foundation

As an NGO based in Ghana, Nature & Development Foundation works with partners across West Africa to create a society where human development and nature conservation complement each other. Its work aims to halt forest degradation and biodiversity loss and alleviate poverty in the region.

Project: support 4,200 farmers to restore 1,700 hectares of degraded forest lands in the Bono East Region through the planting of mango and cashew seedlings, and training farmers on planting protocols, tree management and good agricultural practices.

Goshen Global Vision

Goshen Global Vision is a local NGO that works to restore ecosystems, combat deforestation, and promote climate-smart agricultural practices, particularly in the Western Region of Ghana. It empowers communities – especially women and youth – through education, alternative livelihoods, and tools to ensure environmental stewardship.

Project: plant 2.2 million native, economic trees and fruit trees in cocoa landscapes in Ghana’s Western Region, and reforest 3,049 hectares of degraded areas in cocoa agroforestry zones and the Subri and Kwame Alabi Forest Reserves.

The grants are funded by the EU and overseen by the EFI-implemented EU Sustainable Forest and Cocoa Programme. The work will take place across the next two years.
