What’s new in Mediterranean forests? Highlights from EFIMED’s April newsletter

The April issue of EFI Mediterranean Network News explores how research, policy, and practice are aligning to support healthy, resilient forests in the Mediterranean and beyond. The EU-funded HoliSoils project held its final meeting in Marseille as the EU took a key step forward with the draft Soil Monitoring Law. Project results, including guidance materials, tools and policy briefs, are expected by autumn and will offer valuable support for forest soil management under changing climate conditions.
This month’s edition also highlights how local and science-based approaches are shaping forest resilience. From community-based forest co-management in Tunisia to EUFORGEN’s 30 years of conserving forest genetic resources, long-term collaboration remains key. Research from ForestPaths and a new study linking forestry and viticulture demonstrate how land management choices affect both biodiversity and wildfire risk.
EFI’s latest publication helps stakeholders navigate complex EU wood-based policy, while a ThinkForest webinar put the spotlight on carbon farming and its policy challenges. Educational and training opportunities, such as the MEDfOR master’s and ForestValue2’s summer school, are helping prepare future forestry leaders.
As always, this edition includes calls, upcoming events, and publications from across the Mediterranean and beyond, alongside updates on policy forums, international projects, and open opportunities for funding and collaboration.
