EFI Bioregions Facility and the Ministry of North Rhine Westphalia, with the Cluster Wald and Holz and Deutsche Messe (The German Fair, organiser of LIGNA), are hosting the first day of the Wood Industry Summit, on 27 September 2021.

Following the LIGNA opening ceremony, ministers from around Europe and leading experts will present diverse perspectives to shape the future of the wood-based industry and support the transition to a sustainable, circular bioeconomy. From the role of forests and wood, via policy frameworks and action, to bringing new ideas to the market as viable and competitive products and services through funding and business acceleration, the wood-industry has many opportunities to transform the sector and thus to transform Europe. With this transformation, the potential of the circular bioeconomy and forests towards an inclusive, sustainable and just economy can be achieved.

The afternoon session then dives into a key topic for the industry. “Wood construction for life and living” makes the case for the role of wood in liveable green cities of the future. Looking beyond environmental impacts, world-renowned experts from the fields of architecture, design and research will show how wood is an essential element for enriching our environment, for increasing our well-being, and as a key component of the biocities we so badly need.

European regions will share leading examples and lessons learned, and all presenters will join a panel discussion looking in detail into how benefits and incentives may succeed in firmly integrating wood into the European building stock.
