The Embassy of Finland in Spain, together with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of Spain, and the European Forest Institute (EFI), are organising an hybrid seminar to discuss the role of forests in climate change mitigation.

The potential for forests to play a major role mitigating climate change is increasingly acknowledged. To support our forests and maximise their potential, effective forest management, sustainable use of forest resources and protection of biodiversity are vital. Yet sustainable forest management needs incentives, for which it is essential also to concentrate on the economic opportunities and benefits offered by forests and the bioeconomy.

This event will explore the close connection between forests, biodiversity and climate change, discusses cooperation related to forest restoration and management, and presents innovative forest-based and bioeconomy solutions. This opportunity for an exchange of information about past experiences and current initiatives sets the scene for future collaboration to support our forests to help us.

The discussion will bring together diplomats, bioeconomy entrepreneurs, and forests experts, including the head of the EFI Mediterranean Facility (EFIMED), Michele Bozzano, and EFIMED principal scientist Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat. These high-level speakers will exploring three main questions:

  • How to protect biodiversity and tackle the climate change through forest sector cooperation?
  • How can forest-based industries contribute to countering climate change?
  • What are the latest innovative forest-based and bioeconomy solutions?
