Collecting spatial data on coffee and forest cover in Ethiopia
As part of EFI’s support to the coffee sector in Ethiopia, today our partner, the Ethiopia Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), held an event to launch its work on collecting spatial data on coffee and forest cover.
Through this work, SSGI will collaborate with EFI and other partners including the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, and the Ethiopian Forest Development to gather reference spatial data on coffee and forest cover in the country. This data will be used to produce a national coffee map, and update the national forest map.
Today’s event brought together stakeholders from government, CSOs, the private sector and technical partners to strengthen inter-institutional collaboration; agree on data-sharing mechanisms; and ensure the work aligns with national forest and coffee sector priorities, as well as global market requirements such as the EU Deforestation Regulation.
By following a transparent data collection methodology and making the results available for due diligence, this work aims to support the Ethiopian coffee sector in demonstrating deforestation-free production.
The work is being implemented under EFI’s Technical Facility on Deforestation-free Value Chains, a programme funded by the EU and the Agence française de Développement (AFD).
