Mediterranean Forest Week: Forest-based Solutions
As the Sixth Mediterranean Forest Week draws near, the EFI Mediterranean Facility is pleased to announce the final agenda for our plenary session on “Forest-based Solutions: linking non-wood forest products with the economy: participatory approaches.” The session is held on 2 April 2019 during the week long event taking place in Brummana, Lebanon, from 1 - 5 April.
Drawing on exciting progress made through Innovation Networks of Cork, Resins and Edibles in the Mediterranean Basin (INCREDIBLE), experts from both the Northern and Southern Mediterranean regions will join in a round-table discussion to present inspiring examples of social entrepreneurship, participatory approaches and land restoration in Mediterranean forests around non-wood forest products (NWFP). Through partnerships in projects spanning the basin, experts will share their experiences in cases ranging from edible plants in the UK, Lebanon and Tunisia, to truffles and rural development in Spain and Iran.
Speakers include:
Nedjma Rahmani, the General Directorate of Forests for Algeria will frame these cases with a keynote speech on how to realise the potential for Mediterranean NWFP through key opportunities for innovation.
Christine Farcy, the Chair of the FAO European Forestry Commission and a Board Member for the European Forest Institute (EFI), will chair the round-table discussion and reinforce the importance of promoting social innovation and active participation for NWFP, including unleashing the potential of Mediterranean youth in the sector.
Eduard Mauri, EFIMED, will present a multi-actor approach project for social and participatory innovation around NWFP in several Mediterranean countries, underlining the importance of collaboration for the success of the INCREDIBLE project.
