EFI has published two briefs on challenges to the inclusion of Indonesian smallholders in EU supply chains in light of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), including challenges specifically faced by indigenous communities, developed by its KAMI project.

Inclusion of Indonesian smallholders in European Union supply chains under the EU Deforestation Regulation: Challenges and potential mitigation measures

This brief examines challenges posed by the EUDR to including smallholders in commodity supply chains to the EU. It looks at several EUDR-relevant commodities: palm oil, rubber, cocoa, coffee and wood. Measures to maintain and/or increase smallholder participation in EU supply chains are proposed.

Indigenous oil palm smallholders in Indonesia’s state forest and the EU Deforestation Regulation

Indigenous oil palm producers in Indonesia face particular challenges with respect to the EUDR, including issues relating to proving legal land use rights, collecting and transferring geolocation and traceability information, and demonstrating deforestation-free production. Several national initiatives exist which could help address these issues, including the Social Forestry Programme and Agrarian Reform Programme. Download the brief here.

These publications provide a more comprehensive understanding of the issues faced by smallholders and indigenous communities in accessing EU commodity markets.
