The European Forest Institute’s International Partnerships Facility has launched the Forest Governance Index (FGI) website, a platform designed to deepen understanding of forest governance and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders committed to sustainable forest management.

The FGI serves as a comprehensive tool for assessing and monitoring governance aspects essential for the management, protection, and conservation of forests. The International Partnerships Facility has used the FGI extensively over the years, engaging national experts and stakeholders in evaluating key areas of national forest governance. This process allows for the tracking of governance evolution over time and understanding the influence of policy processes on these domains.

In collaboration, the World Resources Institute (WRI) has also applied the FGI to assess forest governance at the subnational level, with a particular focus on palm oil production. This partnership highlights the versatility and applicability of the FGI across diverse levels and types of forest land use.

By using the FGI, national stakeholders have the opportunity to participate in assessments, contribute to data analysis, and engage in dialogues surrounding the findings. The insights derived from the FGI hold potential for various actors interested in or concerned about governance in the forest sector. They can serve to raise awareness about critical aspects of forest governance, to facilitate inclusive discussions among stakeholders, and to guide reforms and capacity-building efforts by identifying focus areas and informing strategic interventions.
